Some 60 families evacuated their homes as a brushfire in the Jerusalem hills crept closer to the Shoresh neighborhood about five miles outside of Jerusalem.
Firefighters battled the blaze with firetrucks and planes.
While Israel is experiencing a heatwave, Fire Commissioner Dedi Simchi said the fire was likely started by a person, not the heat.
“It seems it was not the weather that started the fire, but there is no doubt it is accelerating it and making it bigger,” Simchi said.
Highway 1 between tel Aviv and Jerusalem was temporarily closed to traffic.
