Turkish foreign minister hosts Hamas leader Haniyeh for meeting

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan hosted Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, on Saturday night, according to diplomatic reports. It is reportedly the first visit Haniyeh has made to Turkey since the start of the war on Oct. 7.

Turkish diplomatic sources said the two discussed the need for an immediate ceasefire in the war, increasing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and releasing the hostages while promoting a two-state solution.

The last official contact between the two was Oct. 16, when they held a phone conversation.

Yesterday, a video of an interview with Hamas general leader Khaled Mashaal was released , in which he rejected a two-state solution, stating: “Palestine, from the river to the sea, from north to south.”

He said that Hamas rejects the 1967 borders, adding, “We have nothing to do with the two-state solution.”
