IDF begins investigation into shooting of Palestinian who converted to Judaism

IDF military police are investigating whether the shooting of a Palestinian by an IDF reservist south of Jerusalem on Thursday morning was justified, the IDF announced.

Sameh Zeitoun, a 63-year-old man from Hebron, was shot near the town of Elazar after he allegedly “aroused the suspicion” of the reservist. He later died from his wounds.

Israeli media outlets reported that Zeitoun had raised his hands when he was shot, and didn’t have a visible weapon on him at the time. After he was shot, a small knife was found in his bag.

“Immediately upon receiving the report about the serious incident, the Military Advocate General ordered the opening of an investigation by the Military Police,” the IDF said.

Zeitoun reportedly converted to Judaism some years ago and was denied a request to receive Israeli citizenship.
